The Improved Hand Held Initializer (IHHI) is a fielded, ruggedized PDA that can use either its IRDA port or a serial I/O interface for configuring devices.

The IHHI can query a master device for configuration settings and transport them to slaves to bring them onto the network. Modules may also establish connection to an existing network over the air, provided they are set to the same RF frequency. All configuration settings are stored in non-volatile memory within the module.

The IHHI is used to initialize field information technology to ground and air platforms to create a Vehicle Area Network (VAN). It configures Player ID, Player Type, equipment type, ammunition inventory, greenkey and radio frequency and setup for the IPU, GPU 2 and the SMODIM.
