FIELD ARTILLERY TRAINING SYSTEMS

ICE has developed Field Artillery Training Systems for the M109A6 Paladin and the M270/M270A1 Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) to be incorporated into Collective Training Systems for Force-on-Force and Force-on-Target training.

The Field Artillery Training System is a Tactical Engagement Simulation System (TESS) that utilizes advanced technology and provides a Wireless-Vehicle Area Network (W-VAN) capability. Weapon platforms are MILES enabled and capable of simulating geometric engagements. 

The SMODIM device actively monitors, tracks, records and telemeters exercise data to the Command & Control ground host system for performance evaluation and After Action Review (AAR). Platform maneuvers, fire control system input, and munitions firing are displayed on 3D digital maps with variable view perspective utilizing the SMOTAR software program.

CURRENT SYSTEMS

MULTIPLE LAUNCH ROCKET SYSTEM-TESS

The Multiple Launch Rocket System-TESS (MLRS-T) provides instrumented capability to Field Artillery Soldiers delivering real-time data and performance monitoring during all aspects of training and live fire missions.

MISSION EXECUTION
The MLRS-TESS facilitates full spectrum Force-on-Force and Force-on-Target operational support (GDU-R) for live or dry fire exercises and embedded training for crews and units. Integration at the CTCs provides a realistic player on the Battlefield (missile flyouts, BDA, AZ/EL of Fire). Conduct of all Gunnery Tables are enhanced without an over-reliance on RRPRs. Supports Master Gunners conduct of Table VI Gunnery with GDU playbacks.

MUNITIONS COMPATIBLE
MLRS-TESS operates with tactical or non-tactical launcher software and supports all munitions within the MLRS Family of Munitions (MFOM). It is also compatible with M270, M270A1 and HIMARS launcher platforms.

The MFOM Weapon Simulators (MWSA1) emulates real munitions and exercises the launchers' tactical circuits and software in the same manner as a live round. MWSA1 provides 100% reliability factor of system functionality. Fault Insertion includes misfire, hang-fire, and dud.

LAUNCHER INSTRUMENTATION AND DATA ACQUISITION SYSTEM

The Launcher Instrumentation and Data Acquisition System (LIDAS) is used for real-time monitoring and simultaneous recording of the data buses located on a Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) tactical system. LIDAS is adaptaptable to a variety of MLRS platforms including the M270, M270A1 and HIMARS trainers. All “Live Fire” training at the White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) requires LIDAS to be installed on the launchers. The LIDAS has been delivered to Germany, UK, France, Korea and Japan.

The High Mobility Artillery Rocket System M142 (HIMARS) is the newest member of the MLRS family. LIDAS has been adapted for the unique HIMARS program requirements. LIDAS was key in developing the initial HIMARS platform delivered under the Advanced Concept Technology Demonstration (ACTD) program for evaluation by the XVIII Airborne Corps. LIDAS was used for the Extended System Integration Testing (ESIT) of the HIMARS EMD variant.

PALADIN TESS

The M109A6 Paladin-Tactical Engagement Simulation System (Paladin-TESS) is an integrated training system for artillery that supports both training and live fire missions. It is designed for use at Home Stations, Combat Training Centers (CTCs), local training areas, and deployed locations. Advanced technology emulates weapons’ characteristics and provides assessment of weapons’ effects during gunnery training. Real-time monitoring of crew functions and the Automated Fire Control System (AFCS) allows EXCON to control firing maneuvers and provide a safe training environment. It links to other Live-Virtual-Constructive (LVC) simulations and operates with existing MILES training systems.

Paladin TESS includes the components described below:

INSTRUMENTATION PLAYER UNIT (IPU)
The Instrumentation Player Unit (IPU) is the data interface for the Wireless-Vehicle Area Network (W-VAN) and integrates with vehicle platforms, weapons systems and training systems. The IPU has built-in MILES sensors and is affiliated with additional Wireless Laser Sensors (WLS) used for target engagements. Data is transmitted from the IPU to the Mobile Command Center (MCC) for real-time monitoring and simultaneous recording for AAR.

WIRELESS-VEHICLE AREA NETWORK (W-VAN)
The Greenlinks communication system operates in approved military RF band ranges and is secured for EMI sensitive equipment. 1601 channels provide the capability to coordinate all RF traffic within a local proximity and allocate a channel free from interference.

AMMUNITION TRACKING SYSTEM (ATS)
The Ammunition Tracking System (ATS) maintains status of ammunition as it is being reloaded, unloaded, or transferred. The ATS replicates authorized basic loads during training and live fire missions.

WIRELESS LASER SENSORS (WLS)
Wireless Laser Sensors (WLS) provide increased detection in the W-VAN. The WLS detect MILES codes and transmit them over the W-VAN back to the IPU.
