AIR DEFENSE TRAINING SYSTEMS

A Collective Training capability requirement of the U.S. Army was met with the fielding of the Avenger Tactical Engagement Simulation System (TESS), which emulates missile and gun engagements using geometric pairing.

The Aircraft Survivability Equipment Trainer (ASET) IV Instrumentation Kit was also developed to provide realistic Force-on-Force and collective training. Both systems incorporate the SMart On-board Data Interface Module (SMODIM).

CURRENT SYSTEMS

AVENGER TESS

The Avenger is a tactical U.S. Army weapon system that provides protection from hostile aircraft. Avenger weaponry consists of Stinger missiles and a .50 caliber machine gun. The Avenger is mounted on a High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV).

Avenger TESS integration comprises a SMODIM and peripherals that enhance the capability to interface with TESS equipped aircraft and other instrumented players. Avenger TESS simulates missile and .50 cal gun engagements using geometric pairing as well as interfacing with the MILES .50 cal gun laser. Visual firing cues are provided with an omni-directional strobe light, and audio cues via the intercom. Avenger TESS monitors the actions of the crewmembers and computes the Probability of Hit (Ph) calculations. The Avenger operates just as it does in combat. The system requires no additional inputs thereby creating no negative training feedback.

ASET IV INSTRUMENTATION KIT

The Aircraft Survivability Equipment Trainer (ASET) IV provides a suite of threat-emitting training devices that support realistic Force-on-Force and Combined Arms Training. The ASET IV Instrumentation Kit simulates Anti-Aircraft Artillery (AAA), infrared Surface to Air Missiles (IR SAM), Radar Frequency (RF) SAM, Command Control and Communication (C3) air defense systems operations against BLUFOR aircraft. The AAA and RF SAM radar transmitters simulate the aircraft ASE systems.

The system consists of a SMODIM, a remote display unit, interface cables, two AAA simulators, two IR SAM simulators, one RF SAM simulator, and one C3 vehicle. The ASET IV utilizes Multiple Integrated Laser Engagement System (MILES) lasers to engage aircraft. The ASET IV training instrumentation is used by the U.S. Army at Ft. Hood, TX.
